About Wisconsin Conservatory of Music

The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music is a nonprofit community music school headquartered at 1584 N. Prospect Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Celebrating more than 126 years, it is the largest community music school in the state, with more than 100 teaching artists serving more than 11,500 students a year. Programs include private and group lessons for ages 4 and up across piano, strings, voice, guitar, percussion, woodwinds, and brass; classes and ensembles such as the Milwaukee Children's Choir; a Chamber Music Institute; early childhood programs for ages 0 to 4; and summer camps. Lessons run at three Greater Milwaukee locations, on the Historic East Side, in Bayside, and in Brookfield, with financial aid and merit scholarships keeping them accessible. Alumni include Grammy winners, Broadway stars, and Oscar honorees.

Challenge

A school this broad has a routing problem. The parent of a toddler, a teenager preparing for an audition, an adult picking up the guitar again, and a donor all land on the same homepage, and each needs a different path through dozens of instruments, ensembles, camps, and three locations. The conservatory's goals were more lesson and program enrollments and camp registrations, so the site had to answer the question 'not sure where to start?' before a family gave up. It also needed room for the school's heritage, its impact numbers, and the financial aid and scholarship options that make its mission real, without burying the sign-up buttons under them. SmartSites set out to design and build a website that helps every visitor find their program and enroll.

How we helped Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Website Design

SmartSites builds an enrollment-first website for community music schools

SmartSites designed and built a new website for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music that sorts families by age and instrument and puts a sign-up path on every page.

  • Design & UX: Led with a hero that asks 'Not Sure Where to Start?' and offers two buttons, Sign Up for Private Lessons and Enroll in a Class or Ensemble, above a stat band of students served, partner schools, and faculty.
  • Program pages: Organized lessons by instrument family, from piano and strings to woodwinds and brass, with separate sections for classes and ensembles, the Chamber Music Institute, early childhood programs, and summer camps.
  • Conversion flow: Routed sign-up buttons to a contact page with a private-lesson inquiry form, added a student login, and gave each of the three Greater Milwaukee locations its own page.
  • Trust & resources: Built an Our Story & Impact page with the impact report and Form 990, faculty, staff, and board pages, an events calendar for recitals and concerts, financial aid and scholarship audition pages, a parent FAQ, and a donate section.
