At LeadsCon Las Vegas 2026, SmartSites co-founder Michael Melen and cosmetic dentist Dr. Alex Rubinov co-presented a session on how healthcare practices attract high-value patients and keep them. Dr. Alex has been a SmartSites client for about 12 years, so the talk covered both sides of the same growth story: Michael opened with SmartSites’ own data from 581 healthcare clients across ten sub-industries, and Dr. Alex followed with how his New York City practice turns those inquiries into loyal, long-term patients.

About the session

From the LeadsCon agenda: “High-value healthcare patient acquisition requires an integrated approach that aligns targeting, messaging, and experience. This session breaks down how leading healthcare brands attract premium patients at the top of the funnel – and convert them into loyal, long-term relationships through a luxury patient experience.”

  • Acquire the lead: reach high-value patients before competitors by combining traditional SEO, AI search, and PPC.
  • Deliver the experience: turn inquiries into high-value patients through consultation flow, messaging, and brand positioning that build trust.
  • Design for lifetime value: align acquisition metrics with the in-practice experience, so marketing becomes a growth engine rather than lead generation alone.

Key takeaways from Michael’s data

  1. Judge PPC by return per procedure, not cost per click. A $500 cost per lead on a $20,000 procedure is a 40x return; the same cost per lead on a $600 procedure is a loss. In dental, fillings cost $40-55 per lead for a $150-250 procedure (3-5x), while porcelain veneers cost $200-380 per lead for a $12,000-25,000 case (40-100x).
  2. Bing reaches the same patients for less. Across every healthcare sub-industry SmartSites measured, Bing had 40-52% lower cost per click and 40-50% lower cost per conversion than Google, with an older, wealthier audience.
  3. Use Local Services Ads wherever you are eligible. LSAs delivered 40-55% lower cost per lead than standard PPC in eligible sub-industries, and the calls come in at the moment a patient is looking. Dr. Alex’s tip: brief the front desk to spot callers who are “not for our practice” quickly.
  4. Paid social lifts everything else. Across 87 healthcare practices over 13 months, practices running paid social had a 2.46% median conversion rate versus 1.77% without it.
  5. Authority and content still win organic search. In 252 healthcare domains, sites with a domain rating of 30-39 averaged 3.3K visits a month versus 401 for DR 0-9. 84% of the location pages SmartSites wrote reached page one for at least one keyword, with a median of 18 days to the first impression.
  6. AI search converts best, but it is still small. AI referrals converted at 3.3% (versus 0.47% for organic search in the same data) while still making up under 1% of traffic, much like mobile in its early years.

Dr. Alex: crafting a luxury patient experience

  • Patients find the practice three ways: search engines, social media, and referrals.
  • On social media, share, don’t sell: show the work, let patients get to know the doctor, and educate (his “Dental Science” episodes demystify the smile makeover process).
  • Referrals come from great work, being honest and authentic about who you are, and giving referrals to other providers.
  • Clear communication separates a luxury practice from the rest: forms, text reminders and a welcome call before the consult; a full exam, treatment plan and financial discussion at the consult; a detailed walkthrough call before treatment; and post-op instructions and a doctor’s phone call after.
  • Acquiring a new patient can cost five times more than keeping an existing one.

“Shift from a product-centric to a customer-centric model for long-term success.” Dr. Alex Rubinov
