Frequently asked questions

Straight answers for engineering firms, from the team that runs the work.

It depends on your disciplines, your service area and the services you need. Most engineering clients pair SEO as the long-term foundation with targeted paid search to reach clients who need a firm now.

We’ll right-size a plan to your firm, your competition and your pipeline goals, and we’ll show you exactly where each dollar goes.

Very. At the typical industrial or commercial company in the calls we've listened to, 44% of calls went to voicemail or were never picked up: 36% during business hours and 59% after hours. And most of those callers do not try again: 69% of callers who reached voicemail did not call that business again within a week.

That is why we track every call from your campaigns, flag missed calls, and help you set up call routing, after-hours coverage and fast call-backs, so the leads you pay for are not lost at the front desk.

Based on calls to 21 industrial and commercial companies we market, Apr to Sep 2026.

We classified a sample of 293 new-customer calls to the industrial and commercial companies we market by what the caller wanted (all industrial & commercial, not only engineering firms). The most common reasons to call were price or a quote (34%), whether a specific service is offered (8%), location, hours or service area (6%) and a consultation or estimate (6%).

Typical questions: “How much would this cost?”, “Can you repair or service this piece of equipment?”, “What areas do you serve and what are your hours?”. Your website, ads and Google Business Profile should answer these before the phone rings, and your team should be ready to answer them when it does.

Based on calls to SmartSites clients, Apr to Sep 2026; questions paraphrased, no caller or client identified.

Mostly business hours: 19% of calls came outside Monday to Friday 9 to 5 (4% on weekends), and the busiest day is Monday. Of the calls that were answered, 55% were new-customer inquiries, 14% were existing customers, and 18% were sales pitches or wrong numbers.

That mix is why we report on qualified calls, not raw call counts.

Based on 11,000 calls to 30 industrial and commercial companies we market, Oct 2025 to Sep 2026 (timing) and Apr to Sep 2026 (call types).

Across the Google Ads accounts of the 40 industrial and commercial companies we manage, the median cost per lead over the last 12 months was $105, with a median cost per click of $2.80 and a median conversion rate of 4%.

Your number depends on your market, services and how well the landing page and phones convert. We use these medians as a starting benchmark, then work to beat them.

Source: Google Ads accounts managed by SmartSites, Oct 2025 to Sep 2026; a lead is a tracked call or form conversion as set up in each account.

For the 31 industrial and commercial companies whose Google Business Profiles we manage, the median profile got about 390 views, 7 calls and 52 direction requests a month over the last year.

Reviews, photos, accurate hours and categories move those numbers, which is why local SEO is part of every plan we build for an engineering firm.

Referrals still matter, but the people who refer you, and the ones who issue RFPs, check your website and search results before they call. A credible site with clear capabilities and project examples wins more shortlists. SEO and paid search also bring in new clients who have no referral at all, so your pipeline depends less on who you already know.

Results vary by market and starting point, but our engineering case studies include a 720% increase in revenue for Biller Reinhart, a 620% increase in revenue for RMA Engineering, a 4485% increase in conversions for Koch Modular Process Systems and an 875% increase in leads for Konsulko Group.

Paid search can produce inquiries within the first month. SEO builds over several months and keeps compounding, which suits engineering services with steady year-round demand. Stone Building Solutions grew organic site traffic 1869%, and RedViking improved cost per lead 83%. Because sales cycles are long, we track inquiries and pipeline, not just clicks.

Yes. We don’t write generic copy and hope it fits. We learn your disciplines, codes and project types from your team, then build pages that speak to both technical reviewers and the owners, developers or plant managers who sign off. Every page is reviewed by a strategist, and by you, before it goes live.

Engineering projects rarely close online, so we measure what leads to them: calls, project inquiry forms, RFP and quote requests, and downloads of capability statements. We set up tracking for each, tie them to the channel and keyword that produced them, and report on qualified inquiries and cost per lead rather than traffic alone.

Yes. We optimize for generative engines (GEO) as well as traditional search, so your firm shows up when owners, architects and procurement teams ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity which engineers to consider. That means clear service and project pages, consistent firm details across the web, and tracking that includes AI mentions and citations.

For most firms, SEO and the website do the heavy lifting, because clients research carefully before they reach out. Paid search fills gaps for high-value services and new regions, and LinkedIn keeps your projects in front of architects, developers and past clients. Email keeps those relationships warm between projects. We recommend a mix based on how your clients actually hire.
