Google Local Services Ads have changed significantly in 2025–2026, impacting how businesses generate leads, manage costs, and rank locally. If your team is still operating on outdated strategies, you could be losing budget, rankings, and qualified leads without realizing it. This guide covers the latest Google LSA updates, ranking factors, and actionable optimization strategies to stay competitive.

Trust Badge
The Old Badges Are Gone — Meet the Google Verified Blue Checkmark
As of October 20, 2025, Google retired the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges and replaced them with one unified badge: the Google Verified blue checkmark. Every LSA advertiser who has completed verification now displays this badge — regardless of industry. The new badge is strictly blue, aligning with Google’s broader suite of trust signals across its products.
| DISCONTINUED OCT 2025 🟢✓ Green checkmark. Included a $2,000 money-back guarantee for home services. | CURRENT — ALL CATEGORIES 🔵✓ Google Verified Blue checkmark. Confirms verified licensing, insurance, and background checks. No financial guarantee. |
| ⚠️ Update your marketing materials now. Any website copy, landing pages, Google Ads campaigns, or collateral that reference “Google Guaranteed,” “Google Screened,” or the $2,000 guarantee should be updated to “Google Verified” to maintain compliance with current Google policies. |
Lead Credits
Manual Disputes Are Gone — Here Is How Credits Work Now
The old “Report a Problem” button was removed in August 2024. Google Local Services Ads now use an AI-driven system to evaluate lead quality and issue automatic credits within 72 hours for invalid leads such as spam, robocalls, or wrong numbers.
But the AI does not catch everything. That is where the “Rate This Lead” tool comes in. This feature is now critical for LSA optimization and cost control.
How to Dispute a Bad LSA Lead (Updated Process):
1. Find the lead in your Leads tab
Log in at ads.google.com/localservices and click the lead you want to review.
2. Listen to the call recording first
All LSA calls are recorded. Confirm it was actually invalid before rating it.
3. Click “Rate This Lead” and select “Dissatisfied”
A dropdown will appear with reasons — spam, solicitation, wrong number, and more. Choose the most accurate one. Selecting “Dissatisfied” is now the only manual trigger for a refund review if Google AI misses the issue. Specific reasons work; vague feedback does not.
4. Submit within 30 days of the lead
Feedback submitted after 30 days is not considered. Make lead rating part of your team’s daily routine.
| 🚫 One important change: geo and job-type credits no longer exist. Google no longer credits leads from outside your service area or for services you do not offer. The only way to prevent these charges is to keep your service area zip codes and job type settings tight and accurate at all times. |
| 💡 Rate good leads too. Marking quality leads as “Satisfied” helps Google’s AI understand what a good lead looks like for your business — and helps it filter out bad ones before they reach you. The more consistently you rate, the more accurate the system becomes for your account. |
Call Handling
The 30-Second Rule Every Call-Handler Must Know
Any call lasting 30 seconds or longer is automatically billed as a lead — no exceptions. This is not new, but it matters more than ever now that geo and job-type credits are gone. If your team spends 90 seconds politely explaining you do not service that area, you just paid for that call with no recourse.
Fast call qualification script (cost-saving strategy):
| Step | Timing | What to Say |
| 1. Identify the need | 0 – 10 sec | “Thanks for calling [Business Name] — what service are you looking for today?” |
| 2. Confirm the area | 10 – 20 sec | “And what city or zip code are you in?” |
| 3. Redirect or engage | 20 – 29 sec | If invalid: “Unfortunately that is not something we cover — hope you find the right help!” [end call] |
| 📋 Post this script at every desk where LSA calls are answered. Getting from answer to qualification in under 25 seconds is a skill that can save hundreds of dollars per month in unchargeable lead costs. |
Reviews & Ranking
Your Google Business Profile Is Now Your LSA Review Engine
This is the biggest structural shift of 2025. As of July 11, 2025, all LSA reviews are managed entirely through your Google Business Profile (GBP). The separate LSA review system no longer exists. Your GBP rating, review volume, and engagement now directly impact your Local Services Ads ranking and visibility in Google search results.
And it goes deeper than reviews. Since November 2024, a linked and verified GBP is a mandatory requirement to run LSAs at all — it is no longer an optional sync. If your GBP is incomplete, unverified, or suspended, your LSA ads will not run.
What this means for local SEO and LSA performance:
- Stop sending customers any old LSA-specific review links — they no longer work.
- Your GBP review link is the only link you need. Generate it from your GBP dashboard.
- A linked, verified GBP has been mandatory to run LSAs since November 2024 — it is not optional. An incomplete, unverified, or suspended GBP means your LSA ads stop running entirely.
LSA Ranking Factors:
| What Impacts Your LSA Ranking | Status |
| GBP star rating and review count | ✅ Primary ranking signal (highest impact) |
| Lead responsiveness (missed calls tracked over 90 days) | ✅ High impact — answer every call |
| GBP profile completeness and accuracy | ✅ High impact — audit quarterly |
| Business hours accuracy | ✅ Update seasonally |
| Unresolved customer complaints | ❌ Can pause or penalize your ad |
| Expired license or insurance on file | ❌ Can remove your Google Verified badge |
How to build reviews the right way
- Ask right after the job. The best time is when the customer is still happy — before they get distracted.
- Send a follow-up text within 24 hours. Keep it simple: “Hi [Name], it was great working with you! If you have a moment, here is our Google review link: [link]”
- Respond to every review. Positive and negative. Google and future customers are both watching.
- Avoid incentivizing reviews. This violates Google’s policies and can get your GBP suspended — which now directly pauses your LSA ads.
Knowledge Check
Quick-Reference: The Rules Every LSA Advertiser Must Know
| Rule | What It Means |
| 30-Second Billing Threshold | Any call 30 seconds or longer is charged as a lead — regardless of what was discussed. |
| Automated Lead Credits | Google’s AI reviews leads within 72 hours. Credits for clear spam and robocalls apply automatically. |
| “Rate This Lead” — Your New Dispute Tool | If the AI misses an invalid lead, “Dissatisfied” in Rate This Lead is your only way to manually flag it for a refund. Submit within 30 days. |
| No More Geo or Job-Type Credits | Calls from outside your area or for services you do not offer are no longer creditable. Accurate profile settings are your only defense. |
| GBP Reviews = LSA Reviews | Since July 11, 2025, only your Google Business Profile reviews count toward LSA ranking. |
| Google Verified Badge — Blue Only | Since October 20, 2025, the single blue checkmark replaces all prior badges. The badge is strictly blue. No financial guarantee is attached. |
| GBP Is Mandatory (Since Nov 2024) | A linked, verified Google Business Profile has been required to run LSAs since November 2024 — it is not optional. An incomplete, unverified, or suspended GBP pauses your ads entirely. |
