The Dealership GEO Playbook 7 Moves to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and AI Overviews

Open Google Search Console for almost any dealership website and you’ll see a familiar pattern: impressions climbing, clicks flat or falling. A lot of dealers read that as failure. It isn’t. It reflects a fundamental shift in search behavior: more answers are appearing directly on the results page, which means some searches no longer produce a website click.

Our co-founder Alex Melen just published the AI search section of the Second Edition of Automotive Search Marketing free on his site, and the chapter on generative engine optimization is essential reading for dealer principals and marketing managers navigating this shift. Read the full chapter here: https://www.alexmelen.com/book/chapters/geo-for-car-dealerships/. Below is the short version, along with the data behind it.

Where the clicks actually went

When we looked at more than a year of Search Console history across dozens of our dealership clients, one finding reframed the whole conversation. Year over year, 92 percent of the organic click decline came from a single content type: informational how-to articles. “How to check tire pressure.” “How to jump-start a car.” These are exactly the kinds of straightforward informational queries that AI Overviews can answer directly on the search results page, reducing the need for users to click through. Take that content type out of the picture and the rest of the portfolio was essentially flat, with commercial pages growing.

That matters because it tells you what not to do. Publishing more generic service how-to content simply to replace lost traffic may be the wrong response. The opportunity is shifting toward content that helps customers make decisions and provides information AI systems cannot easily find elsewhere.

What the AI engines actually look at

The 2026 edition of the Local Search Ranking Factors survey includes, for the first time, a dedicated section on AI search visibility. The expert consensus puts on-page signals first at 24 percent, followed by reviews at 16 percent, citations and links at 13 percent each, and Google Business Profile signals at 12 percent. In other words, GEO does not replace the fundamentals of SEO. It changes how those signals contribute to visibility.

Research covered by Search Engine Land also points to the importance of specific, in-depth pages. One cited finding showed that 82.5 percent of AI citations pointed to deep pages rather than homepages. The AI doesn’t cite “yourdealership.com”; it cites your page about hybrid battery warranties. The analysis also found meaningful differences in the types of sources surfaced by different AI platforms. ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on high-authority factual sources, while Google’s AI casts a wider net that includes local content, blogs and community discussion. A diverse presence beats one perfect page.

The seven moves, in priority order

  1. Let the AI crawlers in. Check whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are being blocked on your dealership website. Check robots.txt today. It takes five minutes and costs nothing.
  2. Answer the question in the first sentence. AI engines often surface concise passages that directly address a query. Lead with the number, the verdict or the recommendation, then explain. Use clear headings and structured content so both people and machines can quickly understand what each section answers.
  3. Build the content types that win now. Prioritize specific buying guides and vehicle attribute pages grounded in useful dealership or inventory data. Think “7 Best Used Toyota Highlander Models for Reliability and Value” or “2026 Suburban Cargo Space”. Original, first-party information gives your dealership something valuable that generic publishers and competing sites may not have.
  4. Make sure the AI can read your inventory pages. eMarketer’s Digital Shelf 2026 report found roughly a third of the content on the average retail product page is invisible to large language models because it’s rendered in JavaScript. Dealer VDPs are among the most JavaScript-heavy pages on the internet. Ask your website provider whether vehicle data is server-rendered and what a VDP looks like to a crawler that doesn’t run JavaScript.
  5. Get on the lists. Third-party mentions can reinforce a dealership’s prominence and credibility beyond its own website. Think local business journals, “best dealerships” roundups and community involvement stories. GEO therefore extends beyond your own content strategy into digital PR and earned media.
  6. Treat reviews as AI fuel. can use review and reputation information when generating local business recommendations. That makes review volume, recency, detail and the authority of the platforms hosting those reviews increasingly important signals to monitor.
  7. Keep every fact consistent everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours, brands carried, services. AI engines cross-reference sources; consistent dealership information gives these systems clearer evidence about who you are, where you operate and what you offer.

One warning about measurement

Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and you’ll often get two different shortlists. SparkToro research published in 2026 demonstrated just how much individual AI recommendation lists can vary between runs. That makes a traditional concept like a fixed “AI ranking position” a poor way to measure visibility.

A more useful metric is presence rate: how often your dealership appears across many runs of many similar questions. In that same SparkToro study, SmartSites appeared in 85 of 95 AI responses when Google’s AI was asked to recommend digital marketing consultants with e-commerce expertise. That type of repeated presence provides a more meaningful signal than whether a brand happened to appear first, third or fifth in one generated response.

The chapter goes considerably deeper than this post: the full visibility-factor table, the dos and don’ts, what to do when an AI states something wrong about your dealership, the fixed-ops angle, and what in-car voice assistants mean for service.
