Quick Summary
Claude and ChatGPT both write solid email copy. The real difference is context: Claude tends to win on structured, multi-source work like audits and reporting, while ChatGPT is often preferred for brainstorming, first drafts and image creative. Connecting either tool to your Klaviyo data, and keeping a person reviewing every output, matters more than which brand you pick.
AI email marketing has moved well past subject line generators. I’ve run the Email & SMS department at SmartSites since we launched it in 2021, and lately the question I hear most from brands is which AI tool they should be using, and for what.
My short answer: it depends less on the brand name and more on how much of your data the tool can see. Below, I’ll compare Claude and ChatGPT for the work email and SMS teams do every week, from copy and creative to audits and reporting, and share how my team splits the work.
The Real Difference Is Context, Not Copy
Both tools write solid subject lines and email drafts. Where they pull apart is context: how much information they can work with at once and how well they connect to the rest of your stack.
That’s also where Klaviyo landed when it asked eight email practitioners, including me, which tool they use. In its roundup, Claude vs ChatGPT for Klaviyo: what 8 experts actually use, the contributors kept coming back to the same idea: the tool that can see more of your account does more useful work.
Context matters because email performance lives in several places at once. Klaviyo, your ecommerce platform, Google Analytics and your ad accounts all hold part of the picture. An AI tool working from one pasted screenshot can only guess, while one working from live data can actually check.

In my experience, Claude is the stronger pick for structured, repeatable work that pulls from several sources:
- Account audits. Reviewing a year of campaigns, flows, segments and deliverability against benchmarks.
- Reporting. Pulling results from several platforms into one consistent monthly summary.
- Analysis. Finding which flows are underperforming and where subscribers drop off.
- Repeatable processes. Claude skills let a team save a process once and run it the same way every time.
Most of the experts in Klaviyo’s roundup, me included, chose Claude for this kind of work.
Where ChatGPT Fits in Email Marketing
ChatGPT earns its spot on open-ended and creative tasks:
- Brainstorming. Campaign themes, offers and new angles for a tired promo calendar.
- First drafts. Copy you plan to rework in your brand voice.
- Image creative. One contributor in Klaviyo’s article rated ChatGPT’s image generation stronger for email creative.
- Quick questions. Fast, one-off answers that don’t need your account data.
Plenty of teams use both, and for a lot of brands that’s the right call.
Claude vs. ChatGPT: Which Tool for Which Email Task
| Email marketing task | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Subject lines, preheaders and first drafts | Either | Both write solid copy; your brand voice guide matters more than the tool |
| Brainstorming campaign ideas | ChatGPT | Often preferred for open-ended thinking |
| Image creative | ChatGPT | Rated stronger for creative in Klaviyo’s roundup |
| Account audits | Claude | Handles large, structured data and multi-step checks |
| Reporting across platforms | Claude | Works well across several sources at once |
| Repeatable workflows | Claude | Skills let you save a process and rerun it |
Connecting AI to Klaviyo with MCP
Klaviyo offers an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, a standard way for AI assistants to read data from other tools. Once it’s connected, Claude or ChatGPT can look at your real campaigns, flows, segments and metrics instead of numbers you’ve copied in.
That’s how my team works in our clients’ Klaviyo accounts now, and it changes the questions you can ask. “Write me a welcome email” becomes “Which step in our welcome flow loses the most subscribers, and what should we test first?”
Before you connect, check what data the integration can see, start with the access you need for analysis, and make sure it fits your customer data policies.
From Answers to Systems: What Agentic Workflows Change
The biggest gains don’t come from better chat answers. They come from AI that can take a task from start to finish on its own, which is what people mean by an agentic workflow. We covered the automation side of this in how AI-powered email marketing is changing campaign automation.
As I explained in Klaviyo’s feature Claude vs ChatGPT for Klaviyo, the shift is from “ask a question, get an answer” to “give it access, get a system.” A chat gives you a paragraph you still have to act on; an agentic workflow gives you a job that runs on its own and refreshes a live dashboard while you sleep.
Here’s what that’s looked like on my team:
| Workflow | Before | With AI |
|---|---|---|
| Full email account audit | Several days of manual work | About 15 minutes, run as a Claude skill |
| Monthly client reporting | 2 to 3 hours per account | About 10 minutes, delivered as a shareable web report |
| Internal client dashboard | Would have needed developer time | Built without a single developer ticket, an estimated 120 to 200 development hours saved |
Speed isn’t the whole story. A human still proofs each one, but they’re editing instead of assembling from scratch. The time we save goes back into strategy, testing and catching issues sooner.
How to Choose the Right AI Tool for Your Email Program
Here’s how I’d approach it:
- Start with the job, not the tool. List the email and SMS tasks you repeat every week or month.
- Use either tool for quick writing. Subject lines, drafts and brainstorms work well in Claude or ChatGPT.
- Pick the tool that connects to your data for recurring work. Audits, reports and analysis improve most when AI can read live Klaviyo data.
- Build repeat tasks once. If you run the same analysis every month, save it as a process so it runs the same way each time.
- Test on one task first. Run one report both ways for a month and compare the output and the time saved.
- Keep a human in charge. AI speeds up the work, but strategy, brand voice and final approval stay with an expert.
Keep Humans in the Loop
Every contributor in Klaviyo’s roundup stressed human oversight, and I agree. AI can draft, check and summarize, but brand voice, offer strategy, compliance (like SMS consent and quiet hours) and final approval belong to people.
On my team, every AI-assisted audit, report and recommendation is reviewed by an email specialist before a client sees it.
