Every few weeks a client asks me whether AI search is real yet, or still a conference topic. So I stopped answering from gut feel and pulled the numbers from our own client accounts, then added the handful of outside studies I trust, each one checked against its source. Where every figure comes from is listed under Methodology at the end.
What shocked me was not that AI search is growing. Everybody knows that. It was the speed, and the quality of the visitors. AI assistants sent our clients almost twice as many visits this September as last September, and at online stores those visitors converted better than visitors from Google. It is still a small channel. It is also the one channel where most of your competitors haven’t started yet.
The short answer: AI search is small, fast-growing and unusually valuable. Across our clients, visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude grew 86% in a year. At online stores they grew 231%, converted at 1.44% against 1.06% for Google organic, and earned $5.33 a visit against $3.09. ChatGPT sends about nine in ten of those visits, and the sites that get cited are mostly the sites that already rank. The seven-step plan is at the end.
Key takeaways
- AI search is a channel you can measure today, not a future one: AI visits to our clients grew 86% in a year, so track them monthly against organic.
- An AI visitor is worth more than a Google visitor (1.44% against 1.06% conversion at online stores), which makes AI visibility a revenue question, not a vanity metric.
- The fastest way into AI answers is still ranking: 55% of AI Overview citations went to sites that already ranked, so keep doing the SEO work and add video.
- AI Overviews moved clicks rather than killing them: question searches grew 11.4% while generic terms fell 30%, so write comparison and sizing pages with your own numbers.
- Optimize for ChatGPT first, because it sends 92% of AI visits, and keep your Google rankings strong for Gemini, which grew 3.6 times in a year.
- ChatGPT Ads are cheap to learn on now, at $3.12 a click in September, but report no revenue, so test a capped budget and measure the return yourself.
AI search is already where billions of searches start
1. ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly users. That is a search-engine-sized audience, and a growing share of those conversations end in “which one should I buy” or “who should I call”. If your business never comes up in the answer, you are missing from a very big room.
2. Google’s AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion people a month. Nobody opts into AI Overviews. They sit on top of ordinary Google results, which is why AI search optimization is part of SEO now, not a side project for the innovation team.
3. Google’s AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users. Google adds that AI Mode is driving an incremental increase in searches and that its AI features now send billions of clicks a week to websites. Google has every reason to say that. The direction still matches what we see: more questions, asked in longer and more specific ways.
4. 55 of the 56 Google results pages we checked showed an AI Overview. Only one, a narrow advertising query, came back without an AI answer on top. For research-style commercial searches, the AI Overview is the default, not the exception.
5. AI Overviews now appear on 48% of tracked queries. That is up from roughly 30% a year earlier. Our 55 of 56 is higher because question-style searches trigger them far more than brand or navigational ones. Either way, there is now an AI answer between you and a large share of the people searching for what you sell.
AI visits nearly doubled in a year, and the curve is getting steeper
6. AI-assistant visits to online stores grew 231% in a year. At the online stores we work with, visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude went from 101,822 to 336,718 in a year. That is still only 0.28% of their sessions. But a channel that more than triples in a year does not stay small for long, and the stores that show up in those answers now are building a lead that compounds.
7. Across all our clients, AI-assistant visits grew 86% year over year. AI visits went from 53,260 in September 2025 to 98,879 in September 2026, and they are up 167% since June 2025. The line was flat through the winter and turned up hard in May. Part of that May step lines up with Google Analytics starting to label AI assistants as their own channel, so some of it is better labelling. The August and September gains came after that, and they are real.
Monthly visits from AI assistants, our client websites
8. For every 100 visits from organic search, sites now get 2.4 from AI assistants, up from 1.0. At the median client site the ratio went from 1.2 to 2.3 in a year. This is the cleanest way I know to track AI search progress on your own site: divide AI visits by organic visits each month and watch the trend, not the raw count, because the ratio cancels out seasonality and site size.
9. Dealership AI referrals jumped 152% in a year. At the dealerships we work with, AI-assistant visits went from 2,155 in September 2025 to 5,432 in the first 28 days of September 2026, and from 0.12% to 0.34% of all sessions. Car shoppers now ask ChatGPT which trim to buy and which store has it in stock. Our dealership GEO playbook covers what that means for a single rooftop.
10. AI traffic to US retail sites rose 693% over the 2025 holidays. Visits to retail sites from generative AI tools rose 693.4% on the year, well ahead of the 520% that had been forecast that October. It is a much bigger data set than ours, built differently, and it points the same way.

11. ChatGPT sends 92% of AI-assistant visits. Over the last twelve months, 694,754 of the 759,284 AI visits to our clients’ websites came from ChatGPT. Gemini sent 3.2%, Perplexity 2.8%, and Claude and Copilot about 1% each. The pattern repeats at online stores (94%) and dealerships (91%). If you only have time to check how one AI assistant describes your business, check ChatGPT.

12. Gemini referrals grew 3.6 times in a year. Across our clients, Gemini went from 699 visits in October 2025 to 2,511 in September 2026, while Perplexity fell from 3,017 to 900. These are small numbers, so I would not bet the budget on them. But the direction is clear, and it matters for the next stat.
13. The Gemini app has 950 million monthly users. Its daily users tripled in a year. The good news is that Gemini and AI Overviews both draw on Google’s index, so the work you already do to rank on Google carries straight over. ChatGPT and Copilot lean on Bing when they browse, which is why we set up Bing Webmaster Tools on every account. Here is a short video our team made on what its new Copilot report shows:
AI visitors are worth more than Google visitors
14. Shoppers from AI assistants convert at 1.44% and are worth $5.33 a visit, against 1.06% and $3.09 from organic search. AI visitors also beat the store’s own organic conversion rate at 87 of the 127 stores with enough AI traffic to judge. It is also why AI assistants bring 0.28% of store sessions but 0.53% of store revenue, close to twice their weight. These shoppers have already compared options in the chat. They arrive to buy.
Revenue per visit by channel, median online store
15. Outside retail, AI visitors convert better at two businesses in three. Across our clients, the median site recorded 0.14 key events per AI visit against 0.08 per organic visit, and the AI rate beat the organic rate at 244 of 369 sites. A key event is whatever the site counts, a call, a form or a purchase, so compare your own two rates rather than chasing our medians.
16. The average AI search visitor is estimated to be worth 4.4 times an organic visitor. That is a modelled figure, and the same model has AI search overtaking traditional search visits for marketing and SEO topics by early 2028. Our measured gap is smaller, between 1.3 and 1.7 times depending on the cut, and I trust measured over modelled. The point both make is the same: an AI visit is a better visit.
AI Overviews changed which clicks exist, not whether clicks exist
17. When Google shows an AI summary, people click a regular result in 8% of visits instead of 15%. Links inside the summary itself got clicked in 1% of visits. That is the whole case for AI search optimization in one finding: being cited inside the answer is now worth as much as ranking under it.
18. The top result loses 58% of its click-through rate when an AI Overview appears. An earlier measurement put the loss at 34.5%, so the gap is widening. Ranking first used to be the finish line. Now it is the entry ticket to being cited, which is where the remaining attention goes.
19. Question searches grew 11.4% for online stores while generic product searches fell 30%. At the median online store, Google clicks on question-style searches (how, what, best, vs) grew 11.4% in a year. Bare product and category terms fell 30.1%, and price and model-number searches 23.1%. That is the opposite of the “AI killed informational content” story. It isn’t universal: at dealerships, how-to pages kept only 45% of their clicks, because ChatGPT now answers “how do I program my key fob” outright. And ranking in the top three for a non-brand search now earns about a 2.5% click-through rate, against 15.2% for your own brand name.

What gets cited: sites that already rank, video, and specific answers
20. 55% of AI Overview citations went to sites that also ranked in the same search. In the Google results we checked, 168 of the 308 citations pointed to a domain that also appeared in that page’s organic results. The AI Overview mostly picks from the sites Google already trusts for the query. The best AI search optimization is still ranking well; our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews goes through the page-level details.
21. YouTube was cited in AI Overviews on 32 of 44 results pages. It was the most-cited domain by a distance, with 59 of the 308 citations (19%), ahead of Reddit with 17 and Google’s own help pages with 14. If customers search for how something works, a plain three-minute video that explains it is now a citation candidate, not just a social post.
22. Industrial and B2B websites get three times the AI share of car dealers and fashion brands. AI assistants bring 0.53% of visits at the median industrial or engineering site we work with, against 0.17% for automotive and 0.17% for apparel. The median across all our clients is 0.31%. Long, technical buying decisions start in ChatGPT, so a supplier with clear spec pages and real answers has the most to gain right now.
AI assistants' share of website visits by industry, median site
23. 76 of 77 Shopify stores already publish an llms.txt file, and Google Search ignores them. Shopify generates the file for you, which does no harm, but an AI text file will neither harm nor help your visibility in Google Search. Don’t spend a week on llms.txt. Spend it on the pages the file would point to.
24. Only 3 of 151 online stores block AI crawlers, and none of 60 dealership sites do. One store blocks GPTBot, one ClaudeBot, and one blocks all five major AI crawlers in robots.txt. The quieter risk is the firewall: 9 of 69 dealership sites refused our crawler outright behind a bot-protection rule, and an AI crawler can get the same door in its face. Most sites have the right policy. Fewer have checked that their security settings agree with it.
ChatGPT Ads are cheap to learn on right now
25. ChatGPT Ads clicks fell from $7.15 to $3.12 in two months on our accounts. So far $39,527 has bought 979,144 impressions and 8,718 clicks, a 0.89% click-through rate and $4.53 a click overall. The cost per click fell from $7.15 in July to $3.12 in September as more accounts came on, and September alone delivered 536,109 impressions. The catch: OpenAI’s reporting has no revenue field, so you judge the return on your own books, not in the platform.
ChatGPT Ads cost per click by month, all SmartSites accounts
An early auction with few advertisers is the cheapest classroom you will ever get. I would not move budget out of Google for it. I would carve out a test budget, send it to your best-converting pages, and let our ChatGPT Ads team or yours learn the format before the clicks cost what Google’s do.
What to do about it in 2026, in order
This is the order we work in on client accounts, ranked by what the numbers above support. The first three cost almost nothing.
- Measure AI traffic before you optimize it. Turn on GA4’s AI Assistant channel or a source filter, track AI visits per 100 organic visits each month, add “ChatGPT or another AI assistant” to your how-did-you-hear survey, and verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Judge Google by clicks, not impressions: impressions dropped 26% in one week in September 2025 when Google changed how results are counted. And read Direct with care; at online stores it rose 84% in a year while its revenue fell 8%, so it is not where the hidden AI buyers are.
- Open the door and check the firewall. Allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended in robots.txt, then confirm your CDN or security plugin isn’t blocking them anyway. Skip llms.txt as a Google tactic.
- Rank the pages that matter. Over half of AI Overview citations go to sites that already rank for the search, so classic SEO on your money pages is still step one of AI search optimization, not a separate track.
- Answer the specific questions buyers ask. Question searches grew 11.4% while generic terms fell 30%. Write the comparison, the sizing guide, the “which one do I need” page, with your own numbers in it, because a first-party number is the one thing an AI can only get from you.
- Show up where the AI reads. YouTube was cited on 32 of 44 results pages. Short explainer videos, honest answers on Reddit, reviews that mention specifics, and a clean Bing presence all feed the assistants.
- Give AI visitors a clear next click. They arrive ready to act, and in a small sample of store sessions we could trace to a landing page, 83% of AI visits started on the homepage. Make sure the homepage and top category pages make the next step obvious.
- Test ChatGPT Ads once the organic basics are in place. A capped budget, your best pages, and conversions measured in your own analytics and CRM, because OpenAI reports none of the revenue.
Here is the part that should not shock you. Every one of these steps is ordinary, careful marketing work, and most businesses haven’t done it for AI search yet. AI assistants send fewer visits than Google, but those visits nearly doubled in a year and buy at a better rate, and the businesses getting cited now are setting the default answer for their category. If you want to see where you stand, our AI search optimization team will check how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews describe your business today and show you the gaps. Methodology
Every number above is either our own measurement or a published figure; here is where each one comes from.
- ChatGPT weekly users: OpenAI, “Scaling AI for everyone”, February 2026: more than 900 million weekly active users.
- AI Overviews reach: Sundar Pichai’s keynote at Google I/O 2026, May 2026: more than 2.5 billion monthly users.
- AI Mode users: Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings remarks, July 2026, which also described the incremental increase in searches and the billions of weekly clicks to websites. This is Google describing its own product.
- AI Overviews on 55 of 56 results pages: our own pull of live Google results for 56 ecommerce marketing searches, from “ecommerce seo” to “google shopping ads”, on 30 September 2026. The one page without an AI Overview was “furniture advertising”.
- AI Overviews on 48% of tracked queries: BrightEdge, its one-year study of AI Overview presence, February 2026: roughly 30% to 48% of the queries it tracks.
- Store AI visits up 231%: Google Analytics 4 for 163 online store properties, September 2024 to August 2025 against September 2025 to August 2026, unpaid visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude.
- AI visits up 86% across our clients: Google Analytics 4 sessions by source for 950 client websites in every industry we serve, each with organic search traffic in every month from June 2025 to September 2026. An AI-assistant visit is an unpaid visit from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com or copilot.com, or claude.ai; clicks on ChatGPT ads are excluded. September 2025 against September 2026, and June 2025 for the 167%.
- AI visits per 100 organic visits: the same 950 websites, September 2025 against September 2026. The 1.0 and 2.4 are blended across all sites; the 1.2 and 2.3 are the median site.
- Dealership AI referrals: Google Analytics 4 for 81 dealership websites, September 2025 against 1 to 28 September 2026.
- AI traffic to US retail sites: Adobe Analytics, holiday shopping season release, January 2026, covering 1 November to 31 December 2025 against the year before. The 520% was Adobe’s own forecast from October 2025.
- ChatGPT’s share of AI visits: the same 950 websites, October 2025 to September 2026, 759,284 AI visits in all. Claude’s share includes three spikes on single sites (about 0.9% without them). The store figure comes from the 163 stores and the dealership figure from the 81 dealerships.
- Gemini growth: the same 950 websites, monthly visits in October 2025 against September 2026.
- Gemini app users: Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings remarks, July 2026, including the tripling of daily users.
- Store conversion and value: the 144 stores that track purchases in Google Analytics 4, September 2025 to August 2026. Conversion rate and revenue per visit are blended across stores; the 87 of 127 counts stores with enough AI traffic to judge. The chart shows the median store, for stores with at least 500 sessions in each channel, and the AI assistants bar rests on 35 stores.
- Key events per visit: Google Analytics 4’s AI Assistant channel against Organic Search, June to September 2026, for the 369 client websites with at least 100 AI visits, at least 1,000 organic visits and organic key events recorded. A key event is whatever each site counts as a lead or sale.
- AI visitor worth 4.4 times: Semrush, AI search SEO traffic study, July 2025, a modelled estimate that also gives the early 2028 projection. Our 1.3 to 1.7 times comes from stats 14 and 15: blended store revenue per visit (1.72), the median store (1.55), key events per visit (1.68) and the median per-site ratio (1.29).
- Clicks with an AI summary: Pew Research Center, July 2025, which tracked 68,879 searches by 900 US adults in March 2025.
- Top-result click-through loss: Ahrefs, February 2026 update of its AI Overviews click study, on December 2025 data across 300,000 keywords. The 34.5% is from its April 2025 study.
- Clicks by type of search: Google Search Console clicks with a known query for 45 online stores with comparable query capture, May to August 2025 against May to August 2026, median store. Question searches are those using how, what, best or vs. The how-to figure covers 32 dealership sites, and the click-through rates for top-three non-brand and brand searches come from the same store data.
- Citations to sites that rank: the 44 results pages from stat 4 where we captured the AI Overview’s sources, 308 citations in all. A cited site “also ranked” when its domain appeared in that page’s organic results.
- YouTube citations: the same 44 results pages and 308 citations.
- AI share by industry: Google Analytics 4’s AI Assistant channel, June to September 2026, client websites with at least 2,000 sessions, in industries with 14 or more sites, with industry taken from our CRM. The 0.31% overall median covers 1,192 client websites with at least 1,000 sessions.
- llms.txt: our crawl of 151 store websites in September 2026 (76 of the 77 reachable Shopify stores had the file), and Google Search Central’s guide to AI features, last updated in July 2026, which says AI text files neither harm nor help visibility because Google Search ignores them.
- AI crawler blocking: robots.txt files from the same crawl of 151 store websites, and 60 readable dealership robots.txt files. The 9 of 69 dealership sites refused both our crawler and a normal browser behind a bot-protection rule.
- ChatGPT Ads: OpenAI Ads Manager data for all nine ChatGPT Ads accounts we manage, most of them lead generation, 4 June to 30 September 2026. One account ran in June, six in July, eight in August and nine in September, so the mix changes month to month.
- The store figures (stats 6 and 14) were pulled live from each store’s Google Analytics property. The all-client figures come from the copy of Google Analytics data we keep in our own warehouse. Medians are per site unless I say “blended”.
- Part of the May 2026 jump in AI visits may be relabelling: it coincides with Google Analytics introducing its AI Assistant channel. The August and September gains came after that.
- One of the nine ChatGPT Ads accounts is SmartSites’ own. No client is identified anywhere in this post.
“Our website traffic tripled in one year after we started working with SmartSites.”
Frequently asked questions
What is AI search optimization?
AI search optimization is the work of getting your business cited and recommended in AI answers: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. In practice it builds on SEO. In our data 55% of AI Overview citations went to sites that already ranked for the same search, so it combines ranking well with clear, specific answers, open access for AI crawlers, video and a strong Bing presence.
How much website traffic comes from AI search?
Still a small share, but it is growing fast. Across our clients, AI assistants bring 0.31% of sessions at the median site, and 0.28% of sessions at online stores. The growth is the story: AI visits rose 86% in a year across our clients and 231% at online stores. Industrial and B2B sites see the most, about 0.53% at the median site.
Does AI search traffic convert better than Google?
In our data, yes. At the online stores we work with, visitors from AI assistants converted at 1.44% against 1.06% for organic search and were worth $5.33 a visit against $3.09. Across our clients more broadly, AI visitors completed more key events per visit than organic visitors at 244 of 369 sites. Compare your own two rates, because every site defines conversions differently.
Which AI assistant sends the most website traffic?
ChatGPT, by a wide margin. It sent 92% of AI-assistant visits to our clients over the last twelve months, 94% at online stores and 91% at dealerships. Gemini sent 3.2%, Perplexity 2.8%, and Claude and Copilot about 1% each. Gemini is the one gaining: its referrals grew 3.6 times in a year, while Perplexity's fell by about 70%.
Do I need an llms.txt file for AI search?
Not for Google. Google Search ignores AI text files, so they neither help nor harm your visibility there. Shopify already generates one, and 76 of the 77 Shopify stores we checked have it. Your time is better spent on the pages themselves, on keeping AI crawlers unblocked, and on answering real buyer questions.
Are AI Overviews reducing clicks from Google?
On generic searches, yes. People click a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, and the top result loses 58% of its click-through rate when an AI Overview appears. But the clicks moved rather than vanished for everyone: at online stores, clicks on question-style searches grew 11.4% while generic product terms fell 30%.
Are ChatGPT ads worth testing?
Worth a capped test once your Google and organic basics are working. On our ChatGPT Ads accounts, the average click fell from $7.15 in July to $3.12 in September 2026, with a 0.89% click-through rate overall. OpenAI's reporting has no revenue field, so measure the return in your own analytics and CRM and send the traffic to your best-converting pages.
